Dystopian series often depict fictional worlds that are characterized by oppressive governments, societal control, environmental degradation, or other elements that create a grim undesirable possible future. They typically explore themes of power, resistance, human nature, ethics, and the potential consequences of certain societal trends.
It also happens to be my favorite genre. Here are my top 10 dystopian tv series that you just have to watch if you are interested in any of the themes expressed above.
#10 Raised by Wolves
Two androids are tasked with raising human children on a brand new planet… and atheists vow to never let religious groups rule a world ever again.
#9 WestWorld
A hyper realistic robot theme park made is made for specifically for sadistic billionaires. The western theme turns people off from checking this out, but it’s really like the sprinkles on top of the actual theme which is about the dangerous of advanced tech, robotics, and consciousness. First season is pure gold.
#8 Chernobyl
This miniseries tells the story of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion, which is considered to be the worst man-made accident in history. Be prepared. This show takes off from the very beginning. The first episode of this is wild. You’re going to want to buckle up, for sure!
#7 Utopia
The British version! Comic book lovers come together to save the world from a massive eugenics program. This show was so fun to watch. The color-grading of this show is so unique and memorable.
#6 The OA
This is one of the most beautiful shows I’ve ever seen. A mad scientist kidnaps gifted people and attempts to reverse engineer their talent. First season is lightyears better than the second in my opinion.
#5 Mind hunter
I wish I could watch this for the first time, again! This is one of my favorite shows ever. Two FBI agents attempt to understand and catch serial killers by studying their psyches. The Charles Manson episode… literal perfection.
#4 A Handmaids Tale
There’s no way you make a dystopian society tv list and don’t mention A Handmaids Tale. Something happens, and the US is turned into a religious totalitarian society that treats women as property of the state. This show is equally brilliant as it is terrifying.
#3 Dark
Have you ever heard of the grandfathers paradox? This German show is full of twists and turns that you will never see coming. I don’t want to say too much, because the surprises are what makes this show so great.
#2 Black Mirror
Do you know why it’s called black mirror? When your cell phone is sleeping, it’s basically like… a black mirror. This show is a collection of stand alone episodes about the dark side of technology. This is the Twilight Zone of our times. My only advice is to not start with the first episode. Again, this is a series of stand alone episodes, so you don’t have to watch in any order. Start with Fifteen Million Merits instead, starring fan favorite, Daniel Kaluuya. This will be a great place to start!
#1 Mr. Robot
A group of hackers try to take down an evil mega corporation. This show is brilliant. Hands down the best dystopian tv series I’ve ever seen. There are 4 seasons and every single one is amazing. From the themes, to the character development, to the twists and turns, and the score… genius. A literal work of art!
Enjoy.
